And then she dropped her tail

Pookie is one of the first geckos I purchased (she is 3 1/2 years old).  I had been hooked by Squish and purchased 2 babies that I named Pookie and Chewy.

They are easy going girls that hooked me in further.

During routine weekly cleaning I was snapping a picture when she jumped on to my camera.  Not unusual occurrence.  I reached up with my other hand to make sure I didn't drop my phone and scared her into dropping her tail.

When her tail detached she was unfazed.  She sat there like it was a Tuesday...

Photos below tell the story.

Pookie sporting a very fine tail.

Pookie sporting a "frog butt"

It amazes me how the tail pulls out triangles of tissue so that the skin collapses on the left over tail nub.  Very little bleeding.

6 grams of beautiful tail. This thing moved for easily 10 minutes after it detached.

Crested gecko breeding trial

I will be the first to say that there are too many crested geckos out there that are not being cared for properly.  With that said I picked my favorite male (with good structure) and my favorite female (structure is lacking but color is good and temperament is amazing).  I bred them last year and had four hatchings in the fall.  I have two more eggs that she laid in February- and they look fertile.  I don't foresee me putting any of them on the market.  I would have to be very confident that the person who got them would care for them and return them if they were not able.  All four hatchins are mellow just like their mom and dad.  I can't wait to see how they develop.

Crested Gecko Update

I love raising these guys.  I love the growth and changes to their mature colors and structure.  Every gecko is it's own surprise.

Pookie- one of my pretty girls
Chewy- came from the same breeder as Pookie.  She has great color.

Next are my two pet store geckos.  I just felt so bad for them.

Google- turned out to be a pretty boy.
Whisky- my gecko with the worst structure- she has a very small head
Brittle- my very yellow boy
Lashes- this boy fires up DARK.  Love his light lashes on his dark base.
Lashes- so cute when they are still growing.

Little Miss Lily- I won her in a Facebook contest.  She is super mellow.  She has such long lashes that she sometime looks sinister.

Your Fired! What being fired is all about.

When I first got into geckos I had to ask what being "fired up" meant.  It is a change in color that reflects a darker pigment.  It is in reaction to the environment. I have discovered they are more likely to fire up if you take them to dark moist to bright light.  I have had them fire up from simply taking them out of their enclosure.  They fire to differing degrees and can even partially fire.  Bellow is an example of Phin unfired and then firing.  He actually will fire much darker but you get the drift.
